The annual Cielo Latino benefit gala for the Latino Commission on AIDS was held May 17 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City. This year’s theme was “Designing a World Without AIDS” (Diseñando un Mundo sin Sida).

Hosted by Tony Plana (Ugly Betty) and Elaine Del Valle (Dora the Explorer), the event honored human rights activist Pedro Julio Serrano with the Dennis de Leon Voz de Compromiso Award. In addition, Gilead Sciences received The Pioneer Award, and posthumous tributes were made in honor of fashion designers Antonio Lopez and Juan Ramos and actress Lupe Ontiveros.

Celebrity guests included: David Zayas (Dexter), Fátima Ptacek (Dora the Explorer), Dominican pop artist Panky Saviñon, Mondo Guerra (Project Runway), Cassanova (Project Runway), Viktor Luna (Project Runway) and fashion illustrator Carlos Aponte. Grammy Award–winning singer Ray De La Paz performed at the official after-party.

The Latino Commission on AIDS provides vital services to the Latino community by providing health education, HIV prevention, capacity building, advocacy and health behavioral research.
