A longtime HIV physician was among those arrested protesting at the North Carolina Legislative Building, News & Observer reports. The Reverend William Barber, president of the North Carolina NAACP, said his group organized the protest to highlight “the avalanche of extremist policies” toward the poor coming from the legislature. Charles Van der Horst, MD, a professor at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and the developmental core director at the UNC Center for AIDS Research, was among the nearly 30 people arrested.
