Alabama Swimming Pool Owners May Face HIV Discrimination Lawsuit
According to Alabama’s Press-Register newspaper (al.com, 5/19), the U.S. Justice Department is considering filing a discrimination lawsuit against the Wales West RV Resort in Silverhill, Alabama, after its owners in July 2007 barred 2-year-old Caleb Glover from using their swimming pool and restrooms because he is HIV positive. The Justice Department began an investigation in January, based on allegations that the RV park violated title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Caleb’s story made national headlines as advocates across the country rallied on his behalf. He was featured on the cover of the April issue of POZ, and also on ABC’s “Good Morning America” and National Public Radio.
According to the Press-Register, the boy’s father, Dick Glover, is suffering from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and is making funeral arrangements during this pending litigation. A federal court petition has asked to depose Glover as soon as possible due to his deteriorating health. His wife, Silvia, hopes that the deposition will be served earlier this week.
“[Caleb is] the sunshine of our lives. He really is,” Silvia told the Press-Register. “Dick’s been sick ever since we’ve had Caleb. Caleb will get up in his lap in his recliner and watch cartoons and play, so the bond they have is so much stronger than the average dad and son. Most dads don’t get to spend that much time.”

"I'm HIV positive and diabetic (as well as have high cholesterol) and some of my meds specify taking them with 'high fat foods' which I have to do twice a day. I've eaten as healthy as possible, but when it comes to high fat foods, I am in a quandary...about what to eat sometimes..."
