Documenting Neglect of MSM, Trans in HIV Financing in Africa

A new report provides an analysis of financing and implementation of HIV programs for gay men, other men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender people in southern Africa, according to a statement from amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, which is one of the authors. The other author is the Center for Public Health and Human Rights at the Johns Hopkins University. The report documents the role of stigma and discrimination in undermining the fight against HIV in Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. It also shows the almost nonexistent HIV funding for MSM and trans programs in the region from the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
