Federal Judge Allows Alabama HIV Inmate Segregation Trial

The state prison had requested a dismissal of the suit, which was filed by eight inmates with HIV who want to be housed with HIV-negative prisoners. Six states segregated prisoners by HIV status, but only Alabama and South Carolina continue with this policy.

This is ashame that they are doing away with this program. I met one of the program managers at a conference once and the reports were great on how HIV segrated prisoners where kept safe and excelled in learning and 80 percent of them did not return back to prison once leaving, where the general population the return rate was much lower. Plus it protected the general population from HIV and returning to spead HIV in the community. This judge truly did not look at the facts or safty issues.
