Utah Bill to Demand HIV Testing of Alleged Rapists

A committee in the Utah House of Representatives unanimously approved a proposed bill to require alleged rapists to get tested for HIV if demanded by their alleged victims, The Salt Lake Tribune reports. The bill now moves to the full House. Proponents of the bill say it will spare many plaintiffs from having to go on a post-exposure prophylaxis regimen of HIV medications to prevent possible transmission of the virus. Currently, rapists in the state are tested for HIV only following a conviction.
