San Francisco LGBT History Project Includes HIV-Positive Pioneers
A project known as the Rainbow Honor Walk in San Francisco’s Castro district will honor 20 LGBT pioneers with a plaque along the sidewalks, similar to Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, the Bay Area Reporter reports. Among the prestigious list of dignitaries are five people who died of AIDS: artist Keith Haring, Asian activist George Choy, singer Sylvester James, Gay Games organizer Tom Waddell and journalist Randy Shilts, who chronicled the early AIDS epidemic in the pivotal book And the Band Played On. To date $1,100 has been raised for the walk. Organizers hope to install the first plaque by gay Pride in June and to add to the current honorees in the future.
