Just days after his release from prison, Chinese HIV/AIDS activist Hu Jia is being held under conditions “equivalent to house arrest,” the BBC reports. Hu’s wife says their home is surrounded by police officers and they are unable to move freely. Hu served a three and a half year prison term for “inciting subversion” after criticizing the Chinese government and the Communist Party by speaking out about a possible government cover-up that led to the spread of HIV to thousands of Chinese. Hu conducted AIDS advocacy as director of the Beijing Aizhixing Institute of Health Education and founded an organization to help children affected by HIV/AIDS.
