People accidentally exposed to HIV and hepatitis C by the National Health Service in the United Kingdom will receive payments from the U.K. government, The Northampton Chronicle reports. About 1,200 people contracted both HIV and hep C in the 1970s and 1980s when they received blood transfusions from untested blood. Fewer than 400 are still alive. Survivors have been asking the government for compensation for lost wages, prompting the health secretary to boost support for those with hep C by 130 million pounds ($202 million). Those who develop serious liver conditions will receive 50,000 pounds ($77,914) with an annual payment of 12,800 pounds ($19,946).
