The city of San Francisco lost $7.2 million in HIV-related federal funding for the current fiscal year, the SF Examiner reports. Local activists claimed that if the city does not restore the lost funds they will lose ground in the advances they’ve made against the disease. Since the HIV epidemic began in the 1980s, San Francisco implemented a system of prevention, testing and care that has drastically reduced the number of new cases in the city—down to 392 in 2011. As a result of the cuts, San Francisco has been forced to use local tax revenue to preserve the existing system.
