DC Releases HIV Report; AIDS Rate Climbs Among Older Adults

Washington, DC, Mayor Vincent C. Gray and the District’s Department of Health (DOH) released the District of Columbia HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, STD and TB Epidemiology Report 2010 Update, according to a DOH press release. The report found that, in efforts to uphold the targets of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy, DC has made some progress in the areas of increasing access to care and reducing the number of new HIV/AIDS cases despite the challenges of growing health disparities. For example, more people (75 percent) entered care within three months of their HIV diagnosis, and fewer HIV-positive people died (153 in 2009, compared with 326 in 2005). However, the portion of new AIDS cases among people 50 and older has increased from 19 percent in 2005 to 26 percent in 2009.
