Thousands of batches of Zidolam-N—a combination of the antiretroviral (ARV) drugs zidovudine, lamivudine and nevirapine—are being recalled in Kenya, PlusNews reports. About 15,000 of an estimated 16,340 batches of counterfeit ARVs have been successfully recalled. Samples of the fake drugs are being analyzed to determine what side effects they may have. Health experts are concerned that people hearing about counterfeit drugs might stop adhering to treatment. Senior Kenyan officials say that they’re investigating how the fake drugs got into the country and that the government plans to better regulate drug imports. Local HIV advocates accuse the government’s drug procurement system of corruption.
