A new sex education book used in elementary schools in China has sparked protests from parents, China Daily reports. Parents claim the books—written for 6- and 7-year-olds and containing the words penis, vagina, sperm and ovum—constitute pornography for children. Written by experts at the Beijing Sex Health Education, the book and sex ed program were launched after surveys conducted among elementary school students showed that less than 20 percent of them had any kind of knowledge about sex, sexual organs or how to handle sexual violations. Sex ed often faces resistance in China. In 2002, a sex ed curriculum for middle schoolers was dropped after protests from parents.
