HIV-Positive Florida Prisoner Betsie Gallardo Dies

Betsie Gallardo, an HIV-positive inmate in Florida who was terminally ill with cancer, has died, the American Independent reports. In 2009, Gallardo was sentenced to five years in prison for battery of a law enforcement agent. Advocates said the charges and punishment were harsher because of Gallardo’s HIV status. Gallardo received a medical release in January after state lawmakers and advocates lobbied on her behalf.
