Michigan Lawmaker Seeks to End HIV Prevention Funding

Michigan GOP state Representative Dave Agema (R–Grandville) has introduced a bill to eliminate state funding for HIV prevention, testing and care, the Michigan Messenger reports. Agema has proposed eliminating the Michigan health fund initiative (MHFI), a $9 million budget used to fund HIV services in the state as well sexually transmitted infection field support work and research done for the Detroit health department. Agema proposed channeling the MHFI money into the Michigan Aeronautics Fund, a move that he said will help pay for upkeep and expansion projects at state airports, will create jobs and keep fuel taxes down.

GREAT! This is an opportunity for us living with this virus to stand up, and carry on with the fight without this gov't. Let's face it, they've been doing a pretty crappy job of prevention.

While I do understand the nature of attempting to balance budgets and increase revenues, I do NOT accept the insensitivity of Rep Agema's blinded decision to introduce a bill and therefore jeopardize the lives of those that are in need of Prevention Services. He obviously is neither affected or infected. But in the words of my Grandmother - KEEP A LIVING!!!!
