A new study shows that the omission of anal sex in HIV prevention programs for heterosexuals in Africa is being interpreted to mean that unprotected anal sex is safe, PlusNews reports. Even though heterosexuals commonly have anal sex, the sex messaging that targets them often fails to mention it. The University of Cape Town study, which was based on interviews with 400 East African respondents, shows that the omission is contributing to the erroneous belief that unprotected anal sex does not transmit HIV.
