A Throbbing Migrant Headache
July 25, 2006—Amid the debate over American immigration health-care policy, data from the Association of Medical Clinics for Migrant Workers reveals that HIV rates have exploded among Indonesian migrant workers. The HIV numbers were especially high among young women, who account for 80% of the nation’s migrant labor force. Experts believe that a low rate of condom use, lack of access to health care, poor education, and gender inequality (which, studies say, makes women feel especially vulnerable to HIV-spreading sexual aggression) have fueled the increase.
