Chinese Newspaper Fined for AIDS Orphan Story

July 18, 2006—A court ordered the China Times this week to pay a 19-year-old AIDS orphan the equivalent of about $3,000 for printing her story and picture without her permission. Staff at the daily claim they didn’t intentionally violate the girl’s privacy when they told her tale on World AIDS Day last year in order to educate others about AIDS-related stigma.
