July 6, 2006—Researchers at UC San Francisco are studying 50 people who have had HIV for a long time but never gotten sick to see if it is their immune system or a particular mutation in the virus that allows them to control HIV. These long-term non-progressors or “elite controllers”—about one-third of 1% of people with HIV—may provide the key to curing AIDS, according an examination today by the Los Angeles Times.
