June 16, 2006—A genetic mutation could explain why apes and monkeys with SIV (simian immunodeficiency virus) stay healthy while HIV makes people sick, reports a study in this week’s issue of Cell. The discovery of a function called nef that is shut off in primates could lead to new ways of treating humans.
