South Africa Politician Acquitted of Rape
May 8, 2006—Jacob Zuma was found not guilty today of raping an HIV positive activist, sparking concern that the ruling and his testimony in the case may damage South African prevention efforts. Zuma, once Deputy President and head of the National AIDS Council, told the court the sex was consensual and that he didn’t use a condom because of the low risk of woman-to-man transmission. AIDS activists fear that might be taken to mean there’s no risk at all and scrambled to explain away his comment that taking a shower afterwards had reduced his exposure still further.
