Woman Tied to Hospital Bed While Awaiting Trial

Having been charged with the relatively minor crime of stealing book bags around New York City’s Columbia University campus, Cindy Fletcher, an HIV positive woman, has spent nearly a year shackled to a hospital bed as she awaits trial. Prosecutors maintain she is a flight risk and that her positive status makes her a danger to others. Fletcher, meanwhile, has lost over 40 pounds and is currently battling a staph infection.
