Mommies Can Take Nevirapine
Pregnant positive women who take HIV med nevirapine to protect their babies from HIV transmission during birth can safely take the drug as part of their own treatment as well—as long as they wait 6 months after giving birth. Researchers feared the moms would become resistant to the drug (known as Viramune in the U.S.), a dangerous event for women in developing countries because there are so few inexpensive treatment options.
