I'm curious what the "safer, effective alternatives" to methadone maintenance treatment are for the medical treatment of opioid addiction that Dr. Mason is referring to. His statement is diametrically opposite to the past nearly 50 years of medical research and data. Methadone treatment remains the most effective & evidence-based treatment available for opioid addiction, and the benefits still greatly outweigh the risks with only 3% of those with HIV having a significant risk for Prolongation.
